Our story is the final half of a narrative that started
in Genesis 25, when Esau showed low regard for
his spiritual birthright as he impulsively sold it to
appease his stomach. In this passage, Esau finally
loses what he traded then.
But the moral failings of all the persons in this
story should not blind us to the sovereign plan of
God. Despite their unworthiness, God’s purpose in
history would not be derailed. His gracious choice
would bless even the most undeserving, if this is
what it took to advance God’s plan:
