Our Father, you are a powerful Creator, a merciful Father, and the God of all comfort. Through the life, death, and resurrection of your Son Jesus we have been delivered from guilt, freed from punishment, and adopted as beloved sons and daughters. Too often we have sinned by behaving like slaves instead of living like heirs. Our conduct has not mirrored our profession. Rather than living as if you have forgiven and taken pleasure in us, we have tried to hide from you in disgrace and shame. Instead of receiving your undeserved favor as a precious gift, we have tried to earn it with our own tainted efforts. Instead of accepting your promises with unmingled joy, we have preferred our spiritual chains with needless sorrow. Your kingdom is worth pursuing, but earthly trinkets have been our desire. Because of sin our joy has not been full, our peace has not been deep, and our delight has not been rich. We are lost apart from your mercy. Please forgive us for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Minister: How is the word made effectual to salvation?
Unison: The Spirit of God makes the reading, but especially the preaching of the word, an effectual means of enlightening, convincing, and humbling sinners; of driving them out of themselves, and drawing them unto Christ; of conforming them to his image, and subduing them to his will; of strengthening them against temptations and corruptions; of building them up in grace, and establishing their hearts in holiness and comfort through faith unto salvation.
