My son, if sinners entice you,
do not consent.
If they say, "Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood;
let us ambush the innocent without reason.

but these men lie in wait for their own blood;
they set an ambush for their own lives. — Proverbs 1:10-11, 18

As we know the company our children keep affects them. It mainly affects their judgment. For when you have one boy, you may have the judgment of a whole brain. When you have two boys, you may get between them half a brain. When you have three boys, you might get a quarter brain. And when you have four boys, well, you have no brain. And when these boys get together, they will make adrenaline-based choices devoid of reason. But the choices they make in these moments end up making choices for them. Because when you make one choice, you get to make all the other subsequent choices that go along with it. It's called the Law of First Choice.

And we, as parents, know the Law of First Choice. We have lived it. And now, with wisdom, we see both the initial choice and subsequent choices that our boys don't see. We see that the first choice to ambush someone will end up ambushing them. We see this so clearly. But they don't. They don't. They only see the enticement of the first choice.

Heed this wisdom. Don't consent to a group that could lure you into sin. Don't go out with them. Don't listen to their appeals. Don't be stuck in the car with them going places you don't want to go. Just play the scenario out in your mind. Consider the second, third, and fourth choices that the first one will make. And then politely step away. It's better to skip out on one moment and miss out on all these subsequent choices than to miss out on life ambushed by a single moment in time.

Nothing is worse than wisdom gained the hard way. It results in regrets like this one — "I wish I would have never gotten in that car."
