“Because”

What more can David say to You for the honor of Your servant? For You know Your servant. (1 Chronicles 17.18)

Has God blessed you because of who you are or because God is merciful?

King David desired to build God a temple, but God had denied the request (1 Chronicles 17.4). God promised David that his son would build the temple and that David’s throne would be everlasting (1 Chronicles 17.11-12). David did not react with anger or disappointment. Instead, he was overwhelmed with God’s blessings upon his life. David knew that all he had was because of God’s mercy. God knew David better than David even knew himself. God knew David’s sins, but God desired to show David love and forgiveness. David had not earned this mercy. He did not deserve an everlasting dynasty or a great name. David was blessed because God is merciful.

God knows you. He knows the sins that you hide in your heart. You have not done anything to earn God’s love (Ephesians 2.8-9). You can only be saved from your sins because God is merciful. God in the flesh took the punishment that you deserve by dying on the cross for your sins (1 Peter 2.24). We should love God because He first loved us (1 John 4.19). Like David, God has given you precious promises. Those that come to Christ are adopted into the family of God (Galatians 4.5-7). They have been saved and forgiven of their sins (Ephesians 1.7). Christians will live forever with God (Revelation 21.3-4). They will be given new bodies that will never die again (1 Corinthians 15.54). You are blessed because God is merciful.

Do you feel defeated? Are you tired of trying to work your way into heaven? Take comfort in knowing that Jesus has done the hard work for you. God offers forgiveness because He is merciful. You can never be good enough, and you can never hide your sins from God. What more can you say to God for the honor He has given you? For He knows you.

God, thank You for Your mercy and grace. I do not deserve forgiveness, but You love me. Thank You for sending Your only begotten Son to die for my sins. What can I say to Your mercy, to the honor You have given me? You know all my sins and how I will fail You in the future, but You love me because You are merciful. Thank You for Your saving grace. Amen.
