"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." Who are these mourners in Matthew 5:4? They are the same people characterized in other scripture as the poor in spirit, as meek, hungry, thirsty, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers and persecuted. We have lived lives of willful rebellion against a good and hold God. As a result, we cry out to God under the weight of the knowledge and conviction of our sin. We recognize that we have sinned and the seriousness of our sins, and are moved by that recognition.
