But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. — Galatians 6:14

Years ago, I used to get a little irritated when I gave a Christian brother a compliment, and then he responded with the phrase, "Praise the Lord." I interpreted responses like this to be superficial and a little cliche. Maybe because I just wanted them to receive the compliment, yet to me, it felt like they rejected it.

But over time, I have learned that men have this intense need for affirmation. This need is so strong and so deceptive that even a tiny affirmation can pervert the glory due to God. With age, I have discovered that all it takes for a man is one compliment, and he will steal God's glory and take the credit for himself. And because we live in a world that rewards success and accomplishment, it's easy to get lured into this manner of thinking. Before you know it, we are only boasting about ourselves. And thus, even a little undeflected glory has the potential to take hold and become glory focused solely on ourselves.

Today give glory to God. Deflect any praise you receive with the exclamation, "Praise the Lord." As you do, let it be a reminder to you that you didn't do that much anyway. God created you. God redeemed you. God saved you. And God gave you every gift you have. Point to him with every success that may come your way, and by doing so, maybe you'll help others to see God as well.

ASK THIS: What has God today you need to praise him for.

DO THIS: Use the phrase "Praise the Lord" at least one time today.

PRAY THIS: God, I praise you with all I am. Forgive me for attempting to steal your glory. And when someone praises me or something I did, may I deflect to you. Amen
