John 13:31-38 Glory, Love, Denial
1. “Love one another as I have loved you.”
Do you want to obey this command of Jesus or not? ( ) Yes.
( ) No.
2. What does the glory of God mean?
-The manifestation of the presence of God
-The fullness of God
-The oneness of God
-In Hebrew, Glory: weight, God is heavy and abundance of all good things in Him
Can God’s glory reveal through me?
-every man has potentiality to reveal God’s glory
Does God want to reveal His glory through me?
-yes
3. Read 13:31, 32.
a. Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. : passive
b. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify the Son in himself, and glorify him at once. : active
c. What confidence did Jesus have in His death on the cross? : God will involve Jesus cross
d. What glory of God do you see in Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection? : love of God, God’s salvation
-eternal life, no sins, no death, no darkness
4. What did Jesus call His disciples?
-my children, little children
What did Jesus tell them? 13:33, 36
-where I am going you cannot come
What did Jesus tell the Jews earlier? 7:34, 8:21
-v.7: 34 You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come
-v. 8:21 I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.
What are the same and what are the differences?
-Jews-you’ll die in you sins
-the disciples- you’ll follow
To where was Jesus going?
-heaven
Why didn’t Jesus use the word, ‘death’?
-death: it gives fear to disciples
-Jesus words require meditation and pray to understand
-meaning given by Holy Spirit
5. What new command did Jesus give to the disciples? 13:34
a. Love one another as I have loved you….. What love did the disciples receive from Jesus?
-3.5 years, Jesus prayed for them. Jesus washed disciples’ feet
-from the storm, Jesus saved them. Calling
-mission, overflowing love, Jesus gave his own life and blood
b. So you must love one another.

c. What kind of love is Jesus’ love?
-total love, agape love = salvation love, complete love, pure love
-God came to this world
-Zero balance: 0 + 0= 0, 5 -5 =0. We give others what we received from other
-Jesus love : 0 + 100 = 100, -10 + 100 = 90
d. How may this love continue in this world?
-Through us: God’s love is delivered through us
e. Why is it given as a form of command?
-before we understand love, we do it because it is command
f. Why would all men recognize them as the disciples of Jesus? 13:35
-Our love must surpass love in the world.
6. What did Peter ask Jesus? 13:36a
-Where are you going?
Did he understand that Jesus meant his death?
What did Jesus answer Peter? 13:36b
-Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward
Did Peter listen to Jesus’ teaching? 13:37
-No. He didn’t listen to Jesus
7. What did Peter want to do to follow Jesus? 13:37
-I will lay down my life for you
What is the highest virtue of man?
-sacrifice in one’s life
What does Jesus know the danger of this kind of human virtue? 13:38, Luke 22:31, 32
-the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times
-Luke 22:31, 32: But I have prayed for you that you faith may not fail.
And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers
-based on self-confidence
-based on self-righteousness
-we need to root to words of God not human will
