Luke 19:1-10 Zacchaeus the Tax Collector



1. Where was Jesus? 19:1 Jericho
Who was Zacchaeus? 19:2 A chief tax collector who hires other tax collectors
What is the meaning of the name Zacchaeus? Pure righteous
What desire did he have in his heart? 19:3 he wanted to see who Jesus was
When does a man seek Jesus? When he had big trouble in his life. No hope, tiredness, meaningless life
Why couldn’t he see Jesus? 19:3 he was too short
How eagerly did he want to see Jesus? 19:4 he didn’t give up
How do you evaluate his action?

2. After a while Jesus arrived to that spot.
a. How did Jesus know his name? 19:5 Jesus knows everything about us He knows….
b. Why did Jesus ask him to come down immediately? Jesus gives him friendship
c. Who invited Jesus as a guest to the Zacchaeus’ house? 19:5, Jn14:23 Jesus himself invited.
d. In what aspect was Zacchaeus more commendable than all the people who followed Jesus? Lots of people followed Jesus.
But, he was seeking Jesus intensely. He had eager heart to seek Jesus
e. How did the relationship between Jesus and Zacchaeus rapidly develop? 19:6 He heard the voice of Jesus. He obeyed to Jesus.

3. Why did all the people disapprove Jesus’ action to Zacchaeus? 19:7
What action of Jesus would be appropriate in their thinking? Ex. Jesus could stay in less sinner house…
How might Zacchaeus have felt when he heard the grumbling of the people? painful

4. Zacchaeus stood up even though he was treated as a sinner.
What showed the repentance of Zacchaeus? 19:8 he showed action of repentance.
When he stood in front of Jesus, he repented
What are the laws about restitution of stealing? Lev.6:5, Num.5:7

What did Zacchaeus choose to do for his restitution? He chose the most pay by the Law; 4times payback
He came out of his sinful life.

5. How did Jesus bless and confirm the faith of Zacchaeus? 19:9
a. Today salvation has come to this house. He has been saved
b. Because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. What does a son of Abraham mean? He has faith of Abraham.
c. What is the purpose of Jesus’ coming into this world? 19:10 To save the lost. Zacchaeus was lost in his sin.
d. What does ‘the lost’ mean? Sinner, separate with God, it is wrong place.
e. How was Jesus joyful as He saved one lost soul?
f. How did people see Zacchaeus? They saw him as a sinner by preoccupation. They focused on his past.
g. How did Jesus see Zacchaeus? Jesus saw his intense seeking heart. Jesus focused on his salvation and recovery.
