Luke 4:1-13 The Temptation of Jesus

1. After the baptism where was Jesus led by the Spirit? 4:1

What was the condition of Jesus when He was tempted by the devil? 4:2
=for forty days, Jesus ate nothing during those days
=he was hungry

2. “If you are the Son of God…………………...” 4:3
a. Did the devil know that Jesus was the Son of God and Jesus had a special power? Yes
Did the devil know that Jesus was very, very hungry? Yes
b. Did Jesus know that He was the Son of God and He had a special power? Yes
c. What does “If you are the Son of God” mean? Prove it
What does “tell this stone to become bread” mean?
=the devil tempted Jesus for using his power for himself
d. What is the goal of the devil through this temptation?
=The devil makes us do something. Good for you
=fail to serve God, to disobey God and separate from God
e. What word was Jesus holding during His extreme hunger? Deut 8:3
=It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone”
f. What does “It is written” mean?
=reciting words of God
=Jesus brought it from Bible
g. What does “Man does not live on bread alone” mean?
=Jesus didn’t deny for physical needs.
=also Men need spiritual food
=God’s love and God’s provision
h. This temptation was blocked by Jesus’ answer. Why did the devil quit?
=God’s word has power
=the devil can’t resist God’s word

a. What did the devil show Jesus? 4:5,6
=all the kingdoms of the world
Is there anyone who doesn’t like the power and glory of all the kingdoms?
=Human desire
b. What was the condition to receive?
=worship me
c. Who is behind some of the richest, the most powerful, the most influential, the most famous peoples in the world?
=the devil
Is it worthy to make such a deal?
=No
d. What is the goal of the devil through this temptation?
=try Jesus turn to the devil
=try to achieve things through deception

=It is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.”
f. From whom do you seek power and glory?
=From God

4. “If you are the Son of God……………………” 4:9-11
a. What kind of work was ahead of Jesus to save the world?
=cross, suffering, death, rejection and resurrection
b. What passage did the devil use to encourage Jesus to jump? Ps. 91:11,12
=He will command his angels concerning you to guard you and “on their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.”

=double temptations

Deuteronomy: Israel failed, but Jesus accomplished

=failed three times, waiting for another time

=he departed from him until an opportune time
g. What is wrong with the devil’s question of “If you are………, then………….”?
=after then…: twisted, deception and logically correct
h. How was Jesus after defeating all the temptations? 4:14
=Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee,
and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country.
=when we overcome the temptation, we become very strong in spirit and power

5. Why did Adam and Eve fail to overcome the temptation in the Garden?
=the devil knows our weakness in side
=the devil sets a trap for each person to fall into temptation
=feelings, unthankful heart, emotions, ambition and success
=we need to hold God’s words.

What is our shield to defend against the temptation?
=memorize God’s words and practice God’s word
= we have to shield ourselves with God’s word
