John 19:16-30 The Crucifixion And The Death Of Jesus


1. Read Leviticus 4:1-35. How did God instruct the way of forgiveness for each group of sins?
a. for the sins of the anointed priests Lev. 4:1-12
=Priest sin: Bring a bull-lay his hand on the head of the bull and kill the bull-sprinkle 7 times in tent of meeting-burn the bull
b. for the sins of the whole congregation of Israel Lev.4:13-21
=Nation sin: Bring a bull-lay elders’ hand on the head of the bull and kill the bull
c. for the sins of a leader Lev.4:22-26
=Leader: male goat –Lay his hand-kill-burnt offering
d. for the sins of a common people Lev.4:27-35
=female goat or a lamb – lay hand – kill –burnt offering
e. What are the elements involved in forgiveness?
=awareness of sins
=feel guilty
=we have to have sacrificial animal
=Killing
=animal must be dead
=blood
=priest
=individual awareness and individual response of sins
=We must pay for our debt of sin after life


2. Who executed the crucifixion of Jesus? 19:16
=Roman soldiers: centurion
=It is their responsibility from beginning to end
What supplies did the Roman soldiers prepare for the crucifixion?
=Nails: 4-5 inches
=Rope
=cross
=hammers
=bitter wine with myrr
=ladder
How did Jesus arrive at Golgotha? 19:17
=and he went out, bearing his own cross

3. How did the Roman soldiers crucify Jesus? 19:18
=nailing with hammer
Who else was crucified? 19:18
= two robbers
What prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus was crucified with two robbers? Isaiah 53:9
=v.9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death

4. What did Pilate write on an inscription? 19:19,20
=Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews
What didn’t the high priests like about it and try to alter? 19:21
=This man said,
What significance is there that the inscription was written in three languages?
=everyone can see who Jesus is by three languages

5. What were the Roman soldiers doing under the cross? 19:23,24
=taking Jesus garments and divided them into four parts
How did they divide Jesus’ garments and tunic? 19:23, 24, Psalm 22:18
=tunic is taken by casting lots
=Psalm 22:18 they divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots

6. What kind of pain was Jesus experiencing on the cross?
Pain due to the wounds
=nails in the wrists
=206 bones in the body
=every joint came out from the places
Pain due to difficulty of breathing
=they can’t take air in and out
=No oxygen is main cause for death
Pain due to being abandoned by God
=Psalm 22:1 My god, my God, why have you forsaken me?
How long did Jesus suffer on the cross?
=6 hours

7. Who were standing by the cross of Jesus? 19:25
=Mary Jesus mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene
How might Mary have felt as she looked at the crucified Jesus? Luke 2:35
=v.35 and a sword will pierce through your own soul also
When Jesus saw His mother, what did Jesus do? 19:26, 27
=Woman, behold, your son (John), Behold, your mother

8. What did Jesus know when He said; I thirst? 19:28
=all was now finished
=His life of sin sacrifice is offered at the altar (at the cross)
=Jesus received all sin punishment on his body
What did they give Jesus when they heard that Jesus was thirsty? 19:29
=the sour wine held it to his mouth
What did Jesus say last before His death? What does it mean? 19:30
=it is finished: Jesus gave himself sin-sacrifice

9. What has God instructed us the way of forgiveness of our sins?
=feel guilty-take sacrificial animal-confess our sin –kill animal
=now feel guilty – on the body of Jesus-confess our sin-kill Jesus with our own hands
=sprinkle the blood of Jesus in front of God
=When God sees the blood of Jesus, God will forgive us

What should we do when we realize our sins?
