John 8:31-47 The Children of Abraham, The Children of the Devil

1. Who is your father? God ( ) the Devil( )

2. To whom is Jesus talking? 8:31
-the Jews who had believed him, nominal believers
-church membership is necessarily membership of God
-This group of people is one of the most difficult group to repent to God

What is their problem? 8:31, 32
-no truth, no freedom, no Jesus words and not disciples of Jesus
-they have their own desires and thoughts

Memorize Jesus’ teaching to them. 8:31, 32
-If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free

What is the way for them to be real disciples of Jesus? 8:31
-holding to Jesus teaching
-changing his mind
-changing inner heart

What is the way for them to have the truth and freedom? 8:32
-Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free
-obedience leads to truth and freedom

3. Apparently what word of Jesus hurt their pride?
-v.33 we are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone
-many years: Egypt, neighbor countries, Assyrian, Babylon, Greek, Roman

4. What kind of freedom did they talk about? When was Israel under the foreign rules?
-slavery of sin

-they were under the slavery of sin
Are they aware of their life of slavery of serving sins?
-no. so many master of sin

5. What is a slave’s position in the family? 8:35
-A slave has no permanent place
What is a son’s position in the family? 8:35
-permanent position
How can a slave become a real family member? 8:36
-So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed

6. What do they say about themselves? 8:39, 41b
-Abraham is our father
-The only Father we have is God himself

Why does Jesus say that they are not the children of Abraham? 8:37, 39, 40
-Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,
-pray for sinners and obey

Why do they have no room for the word of Jesus? 8:38,41a

-They must be happy, but they tried to kill Jesus. hate Jesus and reject Jesus word

-you do not believe Jesus

Why don’t they believe the truth? 8:47
-you do not belong to God

-Truth: God is truth
-Truth is giving life to sinners
What is their attitude to the truth? 8:45, 46, 47
-do not believe. Whoever belongs to God hears what God says

10. In this passage what is their lie?
