Luke 6:17-26 Blessings and Woes

1. Which one is a blessed and happy life? (be honest)
a. ( ) poor, hungry, weeping, people hate you and insult you because of Jesus.
b. ( ) rich, well fed, laughing, all people speak well of you.

2. Where did the crowd come from? 6:17 Why did they come?
=people came to hear Jesus and to be healed of their diseases

3. Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
a. What does being poor mean?
=Spiritual life, prayer life, poor in love and poor in peace and physical poverty
b. What might a poor person likely do when he is in need desperately?
=asking help from people
c. What is he going to possess?
=kingdom of God

4. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.
a. Who are the hungry?
=for spiritual hunger: ex. North Korea
=for love, hope, physical hunger and spiritual blessing
b. What might a hungry person likely do when he is hungry?
=prayer: ex Moses, Jorge Muller
=God answered their prayers
c. Why shall he be satisfied?
=God listens to people prayer
=Hunger turned to blessing when we prayed to God

5. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
a. Why do people weep?
=sorrow and pain
b. To whom does one’s pain and sorrow lead?
=pain and sorrow lead us to Jesus.
c. Why is a weeping person going to laugh?
=God’s reward
=Hanna: Samuel’s mother; she wept for son and God answered her prayer

6. Blessed are you when people hate you……………. …. on account of the Son of Man.
a. Why are you persecuted?
=because of the Son of Man
b. Why should you rejoice and leap for joy when persecuted? 6:23
=your reward is great in heaven
c. Who were treated in the same way?
=the prophets

7. Woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
a. Who are the rich?
=rich in financial condition
=self-sufficient people
=successful people
=self-confident by themselves

b. What are rich people busy doing?
=make themselves being more rich
=they are busy spending money
c. Why will there be woe to the rich?
=they have received consolation

8. Woe to you who are full (well fed) now, for you shall be hungry.
a. Why are they going to be hungry since they are rich and well fed?
=spiritual hunger
=money will fly away

9. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
a. How long can one laugh with satisfaction?
=Laugh doesn’t last long

10. Woe to you when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.
=false prophets are liar: speaking what people want to hear
11. Where do ‘the woe people’ put their happiness?
=in possession
=in present time
12. Where do ‘the blessed people’ find their happiness?
=reward in present time and in the future
=happiness in right attitude even in unfortunate situations
=Godly value
=supreme happiness: right attitude before God
