Hear, O sons, a father's instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching. When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, he taught me and said to me, "Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live. — Proverbs 4:1-4

When I first read this, I admit that I read it with some regret. Two regrets, actually. The first, with the regret that I didn't have a father growing up who passed on precepts to me. The second, with the regret that I didn't pass on more precepts to my children. I found myself reflecting on what my kids might remember, if anything, of the precepts that I attempted to pass onto them. But then I caught myself. I saw a flaw in the logic of my regret — the assumption that it was "too late" to share precepts with my children. And it's not.

And then I remembered a precept that I often repeat, if not daily — "Live all in for Him who lived all in for you." 

Today spend a couple of minutes recalling those precepts or axiomatic statements you remember from your past. I am sure there is at least one that is worth passing on. And then start building your list. Write them down in a journal or post-it note. If you dare, share it in the comments below. Your precept might help others to build their own. And then while you are at it. Share one at least one time today with someone and get used to speaking it out loud so others will hear the precepts that drive your life.
