In Romans 3:21-23, Paul begins to share the doctrine of justification by faith in Christ alone. We see that with the gospel comes the central event in human history where a new era begins to overlap with the old era.

The sermon test was :
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
What the gospel accomplished is the center of human history:
I. The old era was dominated by wrath of God, the new era is dominated by the righteousness of God
II. God’s people were defined as guilty, but now defined as righteous.
III. God’s people in the old era were helpless under the power of sin, but are now freed from its domination.

“Grace has given us back more than we lost through Adam…Christ does not bring us back to the point in the road where Adam stood but has covered the whole journey for us to the very end.”
-Herman Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics.
“If Christ provides only part of salvation leaving us to provide the rest, then we are still helpless under the load of sin. For no matter how small the gap which must be bridged before salvation may be attained, the awakened that our wretched attempt at goodness is insufficient even to bridge the gap. The guilty soul enters again into the hopeless reckoning with God, to determine whether we have really done our part. And thus we groan under the old bondage of the law. Such an attempt to piece out the work of Christ by our own merit, Paul saw clearly, is the essence of unbelief; Christ will do everything or nothing, and the only hope is to throw ourselves unreservedly on his mercy and trust Him for all.”
- J Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism
“One of the most dangerous things we can do as Christians is to determine our theology by our experience, because no one's experience is normative for the Christian life. We have to determine our theology from the Word of God, not from what we feel.
