Paul warns against the abuse of Christian liberty. As we escape from law-works as a principle of life, we must not assume the liberty to live sinfully. The word "flesh" expresses a theological issue in this passage, not an anatomical one. The alternative to the flesh is not mysticism, but practical expression of Christian love. Those who embrace the flesh create a situation where Christians bite and devour one another. We are rather called to bear one another's burdens. The issue of Sabbath rest is discussed and we see that rest is only found in Christ.
