“King for a Day”
Luke 19:28-48

Reason #1
1. Jesus needs to enter the city as the CONQUERING King.
Vs.
Matthew gives us one more detail. Matt 21:2-3

Jesus was carefully coordinating everything. The day and hour had been selected in eternity past. The timing was precise.

Riding the donkey identified him with kings in the royal line of David, and especially with David himself, because the donkey was regarded as a royal animal before and during David’s reign.

Riding the donkey was intrinsic with the attitude of Jesus in life. Philippians 2:5-8

2. Jesus needs to enter the city on a CERTAIN day.
Vs. 37b
This only time that Jesus permitted a public display on his behalf.
Why?
There are 3 reasons, prophecy and purpose.

1) He was fulfilling PROPHECY in how he entered the city
Zech 9:9

2) He was fulfilling PROPHECY and it was recognized by the people.
They sang a Messianic Psalm....118:25-29

3) He was fulfilling PROPHECY on the day he entered the city.
This was the exact day that Jesus was to enter according to the prophet Daniel. Dan 9:25
From March 14th 445 B.C. to April 6th, 32 A.D. is exactly 173,880 days.

Reason #3
3. Jesus needs to enter the city in order to CONFRONT the Jewish leadership.
Matt 26:4-5

Jesus was the Lamb of God who had come to take away the sins of the world. Therefore, previous attempts to arrest or kill him had failed.

The theme of the celebration was peace.
Dr. Luke opened his Gospel with the angel’s announcement of “peace on earth” (Luke 2:14) Now the theme was “peace in heaven.”

Vs. 39 "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples."
To sing blessed is the King on a roman highway was treason against Rome. But it was not just Rome that they were worried about.

4. Jesus entered the city and wept over the CONSEQUENCES of his rejection.

1) The REACTION of Jesus was to weep.
Vs. 41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it

Jesus like the prophet Jeremiah wept over the city of Jerusalem. Both Jeremiah and Jesus knew of the destruction that lay ahead.

2) Jesus knew the REALITY of their immediate future.
Vs. 42"

Luke 21:20-22

3) They should have REMEMBERED all that the prophets had predicted.
They had been given God's word....Daniel , Zechariah, Isaiah David.

Reason #4
5. Jesus needs to enter the city to CLEANSE the house of God

1) They exchanged the temple COINS.

2) The COST of a sacrifice was inflated.

3) This took place in the COURT of the Gentiles.
It was supposed to be a place where evangelism took place. It was the only area a Jew could take his Gentile friend to learn about the one true God.

4) Jesus refers to it as a place of CRIMINALS.
Vs. 46b but you have made it a 'den of thieves.'"*

5) Jesus is persecuted by the CORRUPT leadership.
Vs. 47
We have repeated references of the chief priest, scribes and the elders seeking to kill Jesus.
Luke 20:1, 20:19-20, 23:22-23,

They crowned King for a Day.
But Jesus wants to be our King every day.
