Sermon notes:
When Paul asks: “Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” it is at the climax of his argument. The expected answer from the Christians in Corinthian is; “Indeed God has!” Paul demonstrates that God has indeed “made foolish the wisdom of the world.”
God has done this by sending his Son, Jesus Christ. The word of the cross is the power of God to save and simultaneously the power to destroy the enemies of God. God has in Christ made foolish the wisdom of the world! God’s wisdom is that man will not come to know him through human wisdom. Man will only know God on God’s terms and not the other way around. Paul is not coming up with something new.
The word of the cross is the power of God, and therefore the proclamation of the word of the cross becomes the effective means of salvation. The power of God is effective through the preaching of the cross of Christ.
There is no other foundation in the Church! The Church is not built upon the foundation wisdom, philosophy or impersonal truth statements. The Church is built upon the Person and Work of Christ.
To those who are perishing, to those who stumble; they stumble and perish on the very foundation stone! They do not know God as he reveals himself in Jesus Christ, and so they do not know him. Firstly, the Jews stumble because they seek signs. Secondly, the word of the cross will be the only answer given to the Greeks that seek after Wisdom.
You see to the Jew seeking signs and the Greek seeking wisdom, God has given signs and wisdom. However it is not the sign or the wisdom that anyone was looking for. The signs that God provides all points to His Son! Christ Jesus is the Mediator, the prophet, the priest and the King! He is the wisdom of God. Christ dying on the Cross and being raised from the dead is the power of God!
Christ is therefore the foundation of the Church! There is no other foundation. Union with Christ is the foundation for Church unity.
