When a theological/practical problem arose within a local Christian church that was beyond their capacity to handle, the early church was able to make an appeal to a "higher court" of the church for a resolution to the dispute. Such was the situation in the Syrian city of Antioch, where the apostle Paul came into a sharp disagreement with some who were demanding that the Law of Moses be observed in order for anyone to be saved. The story is recorded in
Acts 15 and has occasioned all sorts of arguments ever since on how to interpret it. Watch as Pastor MacLaren shows how
Acts 15 presents the beginings of a "Presbyterian" form of Church government which is best suited to promote the peace and progress of the church. This sermon was preached at First Presbyterian Church in Perkasie, Pennsylvania (USA) on October 12, 2014. First Church is a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. The Rev. R. Scott MacLaren is the pastor.
