“Darkness”
There is no darkness nor shadow of death; Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. (Job 34.22)
Are you trying to hide in the darkness?
Job was unaware that he was caught in a cosmic dispute. Satan accused Job of only following God because of his blessings and health, but God knew Job’s heart (Job 1-2). God allowed Satan to test Job, but in the end, Satan was proven to be a liar (Job 38-42). Job and his friends did not know about this cosmic dispute. His friends figured that Job’s suffering was due to sin (Job 3-37). One of those friends, Elihu, rightly pointed out that God knows all things. If Job had sinned, he could not hide, even in the darkness. Job knew this to be true and knew he had nothing to hide. Nothing is hidden from God. God knew Job’s heart. Satan did not. God saw all of Job’s deeds. Job’s friends did not.
God knows your heart as well (Jeremiah 17.9-10). We have all sinned (Romans 3.23), but those who come to Jesus have nothing to hide. Even if we successfully hide sin from other people, there is nothing hidden in the darkness that is not exposed before God. For Christians, there is great comfort in this truth. Even though God knows all our sin, He loved us enough to send His Son to die in our place (Romans 5.8). He loves us despite our sin and was determined to do something about that sin on the cross. In Jesus, we are no longer condemned (Romans 8.1-3). We have no reason to hide in the dark (John 3.19-21). Nothing is hidden from God. God knows our hearts.
Do you feel defeated by sin? God knows it all and is always willing to forgive you (1 John 1.9). Do you realize your sins are not hidden in the darkness? There is no reason not to come to the Light of the world (John 8.12). God already knows your sin and still loves you. Darkness is not your friend.
God, thank You for Your great love. I am so unworthy of Your love. All my works in darkness are bare before You. Thank You for forgiveness through the cross. Cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Continually guide me into Your glorious light through the power of Your Spirit that dwells within me. Amen.
