3:13 Brothers, you must not be too surprised if the world hates you.

3:14 We have come to know that we have changed from a state of death into a state of life, because we love the brothers. The one who does not love remains in a state of death.

3:15 Each person hating his brother is a murderer of mankind [compare John 8:44, where this same description is given for the Devil], and we have come to know that every murderer of mankind does not have unending life remaining in him.

3:16 By this we have come to know love, because that one laid down his life on our behalf, and we are required to lay down our lives on behalf of our brothers.
