2:8 To the messenger of the Christians gathered in Smyrna, you must write: The first one and the last one, who became dead but who returned to life, says these things:

2:9 'I have become familiar with your severe difficulty and your extreme lack of resources [or, "poverty"]. On the other hand, you actually have more than you need [or, "you are rich"]. I have also learned about the disrespect toward God [or, “blasphemy”] by those who keep talking about themselves as if they are Jews, but they are not Jews. To the contrary, they are an assembly [or, "synagogue"] of Satan.

2:10 You must fear none of the things you are about to experience. Watch out! The Slanderer [or, "the Devil"] is about to throw some of you into a prison so you may be tempted. You will have severe difficulty for ten days. You must be faithful as far as death, and I will give you the prize [or, "crown"] of life.
