God never withholds His love.
The trouble is, even believers often feel distant from this love of God. Sometimes we feel as though God is angry with us for some of the things we’ve done or have failed to do, so we think that He’s withholding His love from us.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
If you feel distant or estranged from God, it’s not because He’s pulling
away. First John 3:20–24 puts it this way; it says that sometimes our “inner thoughts may condemn us with storms of guilt and constant reminders of our failures” (VOICE), but this really serves no purpose.
We might think that we need to punish ourselves for past wrongdoing, but God knows all things, and He isn’t interested in punishing us. In fact, Romans 8:1 makes it clear that there is no condemnation for us in Christ Jesus.
Continuing to do things you know are wrong will make it more difficult for you to connect with God because of these “inner thoughts,” so I’m not saying that you can do whatever you like without consequence. However, God isn’t out to punish you and He isn’t pulling away from you.
If you’re caught up in past regrets and it’s affecting your ability to go to Him, ask for forgiveness, and then remind yourself that He has never demanded perfection from you. That’s not a prerequisite to relationship. Only trusting in Jesus is—in the fact that His sacrifice made things right between you and God! Then, as today’s verse says, you can stand with confidence before God.
