As believers, we often get caught up with trying to show our love for God. The trouble is, if you focus on questions like, “Am I doing
enough for God?”, you’ll always feel like you’re falling short. You’ll compare your expressions and acts of love with others’, and no matter how much you’ve sacrificed, there’s always someone out there who seems to be doing more.
What if I told you that this is the wrong focus entirely? Today’s verse says, “Not that we have loved God first, but that He loved us.” We may think that we have to love God first to somehow earn His love, but that’s not how it works. Today’s verse makes it clear; God loved you first! In fact, the more you realize that God pours His love out on you always (even when you least deserve it), the more you develop your love for God.
Christmas is a fantastic reminder of God’s love for us. He sent his Son Jesus to this planet knowing that He would have to sacrifice His life. That’s how badly He wanted to have a relationship with you. Sometime today, take a break from the hustle and bustle to think about just how much God loves you. Maybe you’ve been too busy for God lately, or maybe you’ve been feeling angry with or distant from Him. You need to know that He hasn’t stopped loving you. Through it all, no matter what you’ve been thinking, feeling or doing, your Father God loves you, and He always will.
