In Mark 12:38-40 Jesus warned about those who were devouring widows' homes. Widows in the ancient world were often powerless and vulnerable to exploitation since they were often left poor and heavily in debt from the death of their husband. In Mark 12:38-40 Jesus accused the religious leaders of being the ones devouring widows' homes and warned his listeners to beware of them. Mark 12 38-40 makes for a sobering read.
