Last week, during the President’s State of the Union Address, the people of the United States received a priceless lesson on why “doctrine” (teachings that become a set of beliefs) matters. As our eyes absorbed the evidence offered us by the body language and behaviors of the President as well as the Speaker of the House, the whole nation witnessed a tangible display of the direct implications someone’s beliefs have on their conduct. What you believe matters, and what you believe comes from what you’ve been taught. There’s not a single action a person makes that has not been produced by some “teaching” they’ve embraced.
