This weekend we celebrate the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem in what is known as Palm Sunday. This is the beginning of the final week of Jesus’s earthly ministry. It will lead to the crucifixion of Jesus but will culminate in the greatest event in all human history, the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
I have to say, this will certainly be the most unusual resurrection celebration we’ve ever had. In more than 30 years of ministry, we’ve never had a resurrection celebration like the one we’re planning for next weekend. But these are unprecedented times and it requires an unprecedented response.
When Jesus entered Jerusalem on that day we call Palm Sunday, he came to confront the Jewish leaders who were standing in the way of those who wanted to worship, who wanted to honor God in their lives.
Jesus entered the temple and cast out all those who were buying and selling in the temple and overturned the tables of the money changers, saying, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a den of robbers!” It was a dramatic scene.
But behind all the events that unfolded that week, there was a spiritual battle. You get a glimpse into the spiritual nature of the conflict when, just days before all these events, Jesus said to Peter, “Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
There is often a spiritual battle behind the things you see in the physical realm. Jesus was on a mission to seek and to save that which was lost, to give His life as a ransom for many, to become the captain of our souls and to lead many sons to glory!
In the crisis that is come upon the world today, there is also a spiritual battle unfolding and it’s a battle for souls. The enemy would very much like to sift you like wheat, to discourage, to weaken, to bring anxiety and fear.
But in the same way that Jesus prayed for Peter, saying, “I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail,” Jesus is interceding now. God wants to strengthen you, that your faith may not fail, and in your strength, you would strengthen others.
One of the questions I have recently been asked has to do with the question, “Does this crisis we’re experiencing relate in any way to the latter-day events?” I will address this soon in upcoming messages, but for now, let me say that it could well be setting the stage for latter-day events.
But it is also an opportunity for the gospel. Behind every spiritual conflict you see both sides to the battle. The enemy seeks for an opportunity. Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” The apostle Peter wrote, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
But Jesus also said, “But I have come that you may have life and have it abundantly.”
Today, I would like us to study from Ephesians 6 because God uses these verses to strengthen faith and to prepare you for spiritual victory. We have sensed for some time that troubles were coming upon the earth, but those who have built a strong spiritual foundation will stand and stand strong in the days of adversity and trouble.
In Ephesians 6, Paul gives insight into the nature of spiritual warfare and the keys for victory. This world has entered a dangerous time and the enemy would use this as an opportunity to sift you like wheat.
In order to be spiritually victorious, you need to have a spiritual foundation; you need to understand the schemes of the enemy. Many people are not spiritually prepared, they have no foundation, and they are discouraged and defeated.
We need to understand the schemes of the enemy which are against us personally.
