An oracle is on the lips of a king; his mouth does not sin in judgment. A just balance and scales are the Lord's; all the weights in the bag are his work. It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness. Righteous lips are the delight of a king, and he loves him who speaks what is right. A king's wrath is a messenger of death, and a wise man will appease it. In the light of a king's face there is life, and his favor is like the clouds that bring the spring rain. — Proverbs 16:10-15
This section gives us a peek into Solomon's wisdom on leadership. He will provide us with a shortlist of leadership principles as a King of the monarchy. I think his principles apply to leadership at any level — whether you are leading a country or leading at home. Here are the six leadership principles we find in this section.
A man who leads:
Cultivates Spiritual Awareness.
Builds On Righteous Legacy.
Speaks Wisdom.
Loves Truth.
Commands Appropriate Respect.
Provides Generously.
So as I reflected on these six leadership qualities, I also considered how these principles might infer we not lead. I concluded that we should not:
Ignore God.
Build our legacy.
Speak foolishness.
Seek to deceive people.
Demand that others fall into line.
Provide exclusively for ourselves.
And as I did this, I found myself almost naturally evaluating my leadership and where I might need to give attention at home, work, and in my personal life.
So today, I want you to do the same. I want you to evaluate your leadership based on these six principles. And consider one that you need to address. For example, if you need to cultivate spiritual awareness in your leadership, share that below and consider supporting it with some practical step. For instance, you could take one minute each hour to assess what is going on around you spiritually and then lead into that.
The only way we will grow as leaders is by taking incremental steps toward principles like Solomon lays out here. So men get out there and lead today, but as you do, lead wisely.
ASK THIS: Which of the six principles do you need to address in your leadership today?
DO THIS: Share one, and address it with a practical step.
PRAY THIS: God, lead me so that I can lead others.
PLAY THIS: Sanctus Real - Lead Me.
