The Text Readings (formerly known as “Day Texts”) are usually anywhere from 15-60 minutes. This show involves the translation and meaning of Exodus 3:1-15. Here God appears through an angel in a seemingly burning bush, Moses is given a mission to return to Egypt, and God tells Moses of a “sign” for the people as well as God’s own proper name. The translations are from the Hebrew (H) and Greek (G) texts.
(H) 3:1 Now Moses had come to be a shepherd of the sheep of Jethro his father-in-law, priest of Midian. So he was leading the flock beyond the desert and he came to the mountain of God, Horeb.
(G) 3:1 Moyses was shepherding the sheep of Iothor his father-in-law, the priest of Madiam. He led the sheep by the desert and he came to the mountain, Choreb.
(H) 3:2 Then a messenger of Jaho(h)-ah began to appear to Moses in a flame of fire out of the middle of the bush. He could see and, behold! the bush was burning with fire but the bush was not burnt up.
(G) 3:2 Then he was made to see a messenger of Lord [Jaho(h)-ah] in a flame of fire out of the bush, and he could see the bush being burned by fire but the bush was not burnt up.
(H) 3:3 So Moses began to say, “I will turn aside so I can see this great sight, why the bush is not being burned.”
(G) 3:3 Moyses said, “After I arrive I will see this great vision, why it is that the bush is not burned.”
(H) 3:4 When Jaho(h)-ah noticed that Moses had turned aside to see, then God called out to him from the middle of the bush and he said, “Moses, Moses.” So Moses said, “I am here.”
(G) 3:4 Then as Lord [Jaho(h)-ah] saw that Moyse approached to see, the Lord called to him out of the bush saying, “Moyse, Moyse,” and Moyse said, “What is it?”
(H) 3:5 Then the messenger said, “You must not approach here. Take your sandals from your feet, because the place which you are standing upon is soil that is to be treated as sacred.”
(G) 3:5 The messenger said, “You should not come near. You must remove the sandal from your feet, for the place in which you have stood is holy earth.”
(H) 3:6 Next the messenger began to say, “I am God of your father, God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob.” Then Moses started to hide his face because he had become afraid to look at God.
(G) 3:6 The messenger also said to Moyses, “I am the God of your father, God of Abraam and God of Isaak and God of Iakob.” But Moyses turned away from God’s face, for he was in fear when it came to looking at God.
(H) 3:7 Jaho(h)-ah began to say, “I have looked at the distress of my people, which is because of the Egyptians. I have heard their outcry as a result of those who oppress them, for I have learned about their suffering.
(G) 3:7 But Lord [Jaho(h)-ah] said to Moysen, “After looking I saw the oppression of my people who are in Egypt, and their outcry I have heard because of the work masters, for I have learned of their suffering.
