The Text Readings (formerly known as “Day Texts”) are usually anywhere from 15-60 minutes. This show involves the translation and meaning of Exodus 3:16-22. Here God continues speaking with Moses about his going into Egypt to bring out his people, Israel, the nation through whom he intends to bring a “seed” or savior of humankind. But Pharaoh does not worship Jah, and in his resistance God foretells of Egypt’s coming loss to Israel. The translations are from the Hebrew (H) and Greek (G) texts.
(H) 3:16 Go! So you can gather the older men of Israel and you can say to them, ‘Jaho(h)-ah, God of your fathers, he has appeared to me, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to say: “For the purpose of an inspection I have visited you and what is being done to you by the Egyptians.
(G) 3:16 Therefore, after leaving you must gather the older men of the sons of Israel and you will say to them, ‘Lord [Jaho(h)-ah], the God of your fathers has appeared to me, God of Abraam and God of Isaak and God of Iakob, saying, “For an inspection I have visited you and all that has come about for you in Egypt.
(H) 3:17 Now I say I will bring you away from the suffering of the Egyptians, to the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.
(G) 3:17 I said I will bring you away from the mistreatment of the Egyptians, into the land of the Chananites, and Chettites, and Amorrites, and Pherezites, and Gergesites, and Euaites, and Iebousites, into a land flowing with milk and honey.
(H) 3:18 When they have heard your voice then you and the older men of Israel must come to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘Jaho(h)-ah, God of the Hebrews, has contacted us. So now we want to go on a three days’ journey into the wilderness that we may make an offering to Jaho(h)-ah, our God.’
(G) 3:18 They will listen to your voice and the elder group of Israel will go to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and you will say to him, ‘[Jaho(h)-ah], the God of the Hebrews, has summoned us. Therefore, we would like to go on a three days’ journey into the wilderness so we may make an offering to [Jaho(h)-ah] our God.’
(H) 3:19 But I already know the king of Egypt will not allow you to go, except by a powerful hand.
(G) 3:19 But I already know Pharaoh, king of Egypt, will not allow you to go, not unless it is with a powerful hand.
(H) 3:20 After I have sent forth my hand and after I have hit Egypt with all my surprises, which I will do in the midst of Egypt, then after these things he will send you away.
(G) 3:20 After I reach out my hand I will strike the Egyptians with all my amazing feats, which I will do among them, and after these things he will send you away.
(H) 3:21 I have set a preference for this people in the eyes of the Egyptians. The result is when you leave you will not leave with nothing.
(G) 3:21 I will set a preference [or, ‘a grace’] for this people in the sight of the Egyptians, and whenever you should depart you will not leave empty.
(H) 3:22 The female Israelite will ask for an item of silver, and for an item of gold, and for clothing from the closest non-Israelite woman and from any woman living in the house of the female Israelite’s closest neighbor. When you have striped the Egyptians of these items, then you will place them upon your sons and upon your daughters.”
(G) 3:22 Each woman will ask for an item of silver and for an item of gold and for clothing from her non-Israelite neighbor and from any woman sharing the non-Israelite woman’s house. Then you will lay these items upon your sons and upon your daughters, and you will strip away wealth from the Egyptians.”
