"Let's keep our eyes open and Be smart" - Amos 6:1-7 & 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 - the MESSAGE.
Amos 6 The Message (MSG)
THOSE WHO LIVE ONLY FOR TODAY
6:1 Woe to you who think you live on easy street in Zion,
who think Mount Samaria is the good life.
You assume you’re at the top of the heap,
voted the number-one best place to live.
Well, wake up and look around. Get off your pedestal.
6:2 Take a look at Calneh.
Go and visit Great Hamath.
Look in on Gath of the Philistines.
Doesn’t that take you off your high horse?
Compared to them, you’re not much, are you?
(The only period in which all three of these cities were destroyed around the same time is c. 900 BCE, and thus Amos was likely writing soon thereafter. According to the scholar Aren Maeir, https://www.ancient.eu/Book_of_Amos/ )
6:3 Woe to you who are rushing headlong to disaster!
Catastrophe is just around the corner!
6:4 Woe to those who live in luxury
and expect everyone else to serve them!
Woe to those who live only for today,
indifferent to the fate of others!
6:5 Woe to the playboys, the playgirls,
who think life is a party held just for them!
6:6 Woe to those addicted to feeling good - life without pain!
those obsessed with looking good - life without wrinkles!
They could not care less
about their country going to ruin.
6:7 But here’s what’s really coming: … …. …..

1 Thessalonians 5 The Message (MSG)
5:1 I don’t think, friends, that I need to deal with the question of when all this is going to happen.
5:2 You know as well as I that the day of the Master’s coming can’t be posted on our calendars. He won’t call ahead and make an appointment any more than a burglar would.
5:3 About the time everybody’s walking around complacently, congratulating each other - “We’ve sure got it made! Now we can take it easy!” - suddenly everything will fall apart. It’s going to come as suddenly and inescapably as birth pangs to a pregnant woman.
5:4 But friends, you’re not in the dark, so how could you be taken off guard by any of this?
5:5 You’re sons of Light, daughters of Day. We live under wide open skies and know where we stand.
5:6 So, let’s not sleepwalk through life like those others. Let’s keep our eyes open and be smart.

Book of Amos - Historical setting: https://www.bible-studys.org/Bible%20Books/Amos/Book%20of%20Amos.html
The message of Amos is for all time. It was given when the 10 Northern tribes (called Ephraim or Israel) still existed. But I include it now (1st Quarter 2020) when we are studying the prophetic book of Daniel. For just as the Assyrian Empire took Israel captive, so the Babylonian Empire took Judah (and Benjamin and the Levites) captive.
In the modern phraseology of Eugene H. Peterson, Amos speaks to us In the 21st Century. It is also reminiscent of the Church in Laodicea: Revelation 3:17 "You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked."
