For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. — Galatians 5:1

At this point, Paul is concluding his thoughts from chapter four in that he has laid out how we arrive at our freedom in Christ. His purpose was to point out that we have been set free. Again this is not freedom to sin but freedom from sin. But then he adds in a new image — the yoke.

A yoke was something that a farmer used to restrain an unsubmissive animal. It was a tool used to guide and direct them. Therefore, Paul infers that men needed one of these for a while, like unrestrained animals. And the Law behaved like a yoke restraining men. But the purpose of the Law is different from the purpose of Christ. One results in slavery, and the other results in freedom.

But the freedom we are given in Christ is not something to be taken for granted or abused. It is not freedom to do nothing but freedom to do something. And the something we do is "stand firm" in Christ and his will. We no longer carry the yoke of slavery but take the yoke of Christ.

And here is what Jesus says about this yoke:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. — Matthew 11:28-30

So are you looking to lighten your load today? Then stop trying to carry it yourself. Let Jesus carry it for you. His yoke is easy, and his burden is light.

ASK THIS: What burden do you need to give to Jesus today?

DO THIS: Give it to Jesus and then stand firm.

PRAY THIS: God, I want to give a burden I have been bearing too long. Take it from me. Amen.

PLAY THIS: His Yoke Is Easy.
