A live stream hosted by #GregStafford weekdays and Saturdays starting between 6:30 and 7:30 AM PST. We meet for about 20-45 minutes to discuss biblical and other ancient texts which are grouped together for the discussion, as we progressively work our way through these ancient texts.
This show will be about #Genesis 1:2-5 from translations of both the Hebrew (H) and Greek (G) texts.
(H) 1:2 But the earth came into being with no clear structure. It was basically empty and darkness covered the surfaces of the deep sea. Then a wind from God [or, "a/the spirit of God"] hovered over the different watery surfaces of the earth.
(G) 1:2 At this time the earth was not visible, and it had not yet been completed. Darkness covered the sea abyss and a spirit [or, “wind”] from God was placed over the water.
(H) 1:3 Then God said, "Light must come into being." So light came into being.
(G) 1:3 God said, "Light must come into being." So light came into being.
(H) 1:4 Then God saw that the light was a good thing. So God started to separate a space between the light and the darkness.
(G) 1:4 Then God saw that the light was good [or, "appropriate"]. So God made a clear separation between the light and the darkness.
(H) 1:5 Then God started calling the light "day" and the darkness "night." So there came to be a time for darkness and a time for light. This time for light was the first "day."
(G) 1:5 Then God called the light "day" and the darkness he called "night." So there came to be a time of darkness and a time of light. This time of light was “day” one. [See note to (H) 1:5, “the first ‘day.’”]
[Note on (H) 1:5, “the first day”: “Day” and “night” are used here apart from any defined, rotational schedule involving the sun and the moon, such as for the currently shared 24 hour period in which they both shine upon the earth, since neither of these luminaries had come into being at this point (see verses 14-19).]
