#Genesis
#Eden

A live stream hosted by #GregStafford weekdays and Saturdays starting around 7:30 AM PST. We meet for about 20-45 minutes to discuss biblical and other ancient texts which are grouped together for the discussion, as we progressively work our way through these ancient texts.

This show will be about Genesis 2:10-14 from translations of both the Hebrew (H) and Greek (G) texts:

(H) 2:10 Now a river issued out of Eden to water [or, “to give drink”] the special area [or, “garden”], and from there it would separate as it became four starting points.
(G) 2:10 Now a river went out from Eden to give drink to the paradise, there separating into four beginnings [“beginnings” = plural of arche].

(H) 2:11 The name of the one is Pishon, which is surrounding the whole land of Havilah. That is where there is gold,
(G) 2:11 The name of the one is Phison. This river is the one encircling all the land of Heuilat, which is where there is gold,

[Note on (H) 2:11, “Pishon (surrounds) … Havilah”: The Jerusalem Targum identifies Havilah as “India” and the Pishon as the river “Ganges.” If this is correct (as least in terms of pre-Flood India) this description of India having “gold” fits with the historical fact there were gold mines in ancient India, two of which have been operating for thousands of years in the Kolar District of Kamataka state and Hatti, a town in the Raichur district of Kamataka. See also the reading in (H) 2:12 which refers to “pleasant resin” or “bdellium,” a sweet-smelling resin obtained from East Indian and African trees. The (G) reading of verse 12, "coal" or "anthracite coal," is also consistent with the fact India is among the top five world producers of anthracite coal. Finally, historically both “onyx” and “emerald” stones mentioned in (H) and (G) 2:12 also have been mined in India and in Egypt.]

(H) 2:12 and gold belonging to that land is good. Pleasant resin [or, “bdellium”; see (H) 2:11 note] and onyx stone are there.
(G) 2:12 and the gold of that land is good), and there is coal [anthrax, possibly anthracite coal] and the light green stone [possibly, “green onyx,” or, “emerald,” or “jade”].

(H) 2:13 But the name of the second river is Gihon. That is the one surrounding the whole land of Cush.
(G) 2:13 The name of the second river is Ge’on. This is the one encircling all the land of Ethiopia [Aithiopias].

(H) 2:14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel. This is the one going east of Assyria. The fourth river, that one is Euphrates.
(G) 2:14 The third river is Tigris. This is the one going opposite Assyria. But the fourth river, this one is Euphrates.
