Country clubs and secret societies are known for their exclusivity. Usually, only the “right” kind of people are allowed to join. While some country clubs are elitist and want only the cream of society as members, for most it’s whoever can afford the fees. But even those won’t let anyone join who can’t pay the entry fees. For secret societies, well since I’ve never joined one, the requirements for admission remain hidden from me.
There’s one society that is the most exclusive of all but it’s neither a country club for the elite who are better than everyone else nor a secret society that keeps its rules and reasons for existence hidden. It’s the Heavenly Society described in Psalm 24. This society is exclusive because it only allows the “right” kind of people. However, it’s not an elitist country club since the invitation is extended to everyone, even the dregs of humanity, and the entrance fee is paid by the owner. Nor is it a secret society since the members are supposed to tell everyone everything about it.
Well who is the owner of this exclusive club?
“The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it. For He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.” Psalm 24:1-2
Ah, the owner is merely the Creator Himself. The eternal self-existent one who is unique and stands alone outside His creation. Which means we’re already members of his created family. Since humanity dwells on the earth as part of His creation then we already are His. Remember verse one says the earth is His “and all it contains.” That means you and I belong to Him.
However, entrance into His presence requires more than mere membership in the human family. Who are the members of His exclusive Heavenly club?
“Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood and has not sworn deceitfully.” Psalm 24:3-4
Uh oh! Honest people look at those requirements and know they don’t belong. Maybe this is just like those super elitist clubs and secret societies where you and I would never be allowed to join! Well, if today’s Saturdays in the Psalms leaves you in despair there’s still hope. To be continued…
