In this opening sermon in a 2-part series on stewardship, Bro. Tom preaches a challenging message about giving faithfully to the Lord by looking at several different types of givers.
Sermon Notes
I. DON’T DO IT! - JUDGE and CONDEMN.
II. DO IT! - FORGIVE and GIVE!
- If you don’t have a kind and forgiving attitude then you just won’t care whether people get saved or not.
- Does God need your money?
- Truth is, Jesus had much to say about money. I think it is fair to make the generalization that He talked about it all the time.
- What is your attitude when the subject of money comes up in church?
1. The Angry Giver
- Gives little to the church but wants to control how the church’s money is spent
- Get angry whenever the pastor preaches on money
- They give out of a sense of duty, fear and/or pride.
- They are in rebellion to God.
2. The Apathetic Giver
- Complains about their dire financial circumstances
- They don’t get mad, they just ignore the instruction based on “personal reasons.”
- They do not believe God.
- They are motivated by both fear and pride.
3. The Above the Law Giver
- They set their own standards for giving, replacing God’s instruction. Likes the term “grace giving.” (Rom. 10:17)
- They don’t understand the “storehouse” concept, so they count any gift they give as part of the tithe. Mal. 3:8-10 - “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse.” The tithe belongs at the local church!
4. The All In Giver
- First, they know everything that they have received is from God. (John 3:27; 1 Cor. 4:7)
- Second, they know they are accountable to God for every- thing they have been given. (Luke 16:1-2; 1 Cor. 4:2)
- Third, they see giving as primarily an issue of stewardship not just tithing.
POINT: YOU CANNOT OUT GIVE GOD!!! - but you can have a great deal of joy by trying!
