Let those who fear the Lord say: “His love endures forever.”
Good morning! Here is today’s word of blessings for you.
Psalm 118: 4-11
4 Let those who fear the Lord say:
“His love endures forever.”
5 When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord;
he brought me into a spacious place.
6 The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?
7 The Lord is with me; he is my helper.
I look in triumph on my enemies.
8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in humans.
9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in princes.
10 All the nations surrounded me,
but in the name of the Lord I cut them down.
11 They surrounded me on every side,
but in the name of the Lord I cut them down.
Today’s title is “His Love Endures Forever”
“God is good. His love endures forever.” Is one of the most repeated phrases in the psalms. In fact, Psalm 136 repeats in every other line as a refrain. We can easily envision that the great crowd of worshippers keep shouting the phrase as a response to each redemptive work of God that was proclaimed by the priests or preacher. By repeating the phrase in such a way, the psalm clearly shows that God’s sovereign love and goodness prevails in the life of every individual as well as in the history of a nation. We find the same phrase in many other psalms including today’s psalms. It is also found in many other old testament books. New Testament may not use the exact same phrase. But it surely carries the ideas of the phrase in all the gospel messages. Apostle Paul says in the book of Romans, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? (Romans 8:35). Every verse in the New Testament that mentions God’s eternal love including John 3:16 is in fact repeating the same ideas. So is it really true that God’s love endures forever? Or is it just a rhetorical poetic phrase? Can we still repeat the same phrase from our hearts? What do you think? The answer should be absolutely loud and clear “yes”. God is still good. His love endures now and forever. Of course, there are times that we kind of doubt that God would never love us again. We doubt it when we rejected and rebelled against Him knowingly and unknowingly and angered him enormously. We also doubt it when everything seems to suggest that God does not care for us anymore. But did such doubt ever come true? God could have or should have ceased to love us when Adam and Eve ate the fruits that He had forbade. But He didn’t. God should have ceased to love us when we replaced multiple idols in His places. But He didn’t. Shouldn’t God have forsaken us once and for all when we crucified His Son? No, He rather turned it around and saved us through it. Indeed, what can we say anymore? We can only say with a great cloud of witnesses that “God is good. His love endures now and forever”. Are you one of such great clouds?
