Paul counseled Timothy to: “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” (1 Timothy 6:17-19)

“Command”: We think of being "rich in good deeds" as one of those optional things, not nearly as important as going to work or paying your taxes. Yet, we’re given those directives very clearly so we can build a firm foundation for the coming age in another realm. We struggle with this because we’re creatures of time, measuring our days from minutes to months, and our lives in years and decades. But time is a temporary thing, and time will end. We want to spend it now by laying up treasure for the age to come. How do we do that? Well, we don’t take a U-Haul to Heaven! No, we lay up treasure by “being rich in good deeds” and by being “generous and willing to share.”
