How Not to Know the Will of God

How can I know the will of God? Every believer at one time or another has wrestled with this question when facing a big decision or major fork in the road in our lives. What would God want me to do? Many of us have been told that it is time to “put out a fleece.” After all, isn’t that what Gideon did? But what we’ll see today in that episode from his life, what happened to Gideon falls under the category of description (what happened on that occasion), not prescription (what we should do). Let’s take a look…

Getting to Know the Will of God…3 Basic Truths…

Basic Truth #1 – God wants us to know His will for our lives. His will for us involves at least 3 parts.

• Faithfulness to the God has given to every believer…

• of where God has not given specific commands…

• Finding God’s in the big decisions of life…

Basic Truth #2 – believer needs special guidance from God sometimes.

Basic Truth #3 – God has given us for discerning His special guidance in our lives.

Gideon and the Fleece (Judges 6:33-40)

• Assembling the troops (verses 33-35). It is important to note verse 34’s mention that the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon. What God gives us to do, He will be there with us!

• Three reasons why “putting out the fleece” is not a prescription for us…

#1 – Gideon already God’s will (verse 37).

#2 – Far from being an expression of , this was an expression of .

#3 – The “fleece test” only Gideon’s doubts temporarily. Later in 7:9-10, God would have to confirm His will to His servant again.
