And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. — Acts 2:44-45

Some readers are quickly confused by what is happening here. This is not socialism or the redistribution of goods by the government. In fact, the government is not involved in this at all. This is a group of people who have gathered from all over the countryside, who now have needs because of their prolonged stay in Jerusalem proceeding Pentecost. A call to repentance temporarily hijacked their plans, and something new was being formed — the first New Testament church.

Instead, what we see here is evidence of true repentance. These followers were experiencing freedom in Christ, and as a result, they were experiencing freedom from things. We often fail to experience freedom in a world driven by marketing and materialism that drives us toward possession and power.

Do you want to experience what this church experienced? Freedom from things? Well, this type of freedom is not found in self-provision, government provision, or the redistribution of another's provisions. The freedom they had is found only in Christ. In slavery to Christ, we discover freedom from things, and what naturally proceeds is an indescribable generosity.

Are you ready to be free? Become a slave to Christ.
