The International Standard Sunday School Lesson for May 16, 2021 is entitled Jeremiah the Suffering Preacher.

Our biblical study is from the 24th book in the Holy Bible, located between the book of Isaiah, and the book of Lamentations. It is the book of Jeremiah, the prophet, chapter 38, verses 14 through 23.

Our Memory Verse for today’s lesson is from Jeremiah, chapter 38, verse 15.

Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah,

“If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? And if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me?”

Two men in the Lord’s House…
One of them opens their conversation with a thinly vailed threat… toward the other…
in church.
The other responds to the threat… “will you kill me if I tell you the Truth?”

In the Lord’s House, a powerful sinner, seeking a Word from God… threatened the preacher.

The Lesson Aim.
After participating in this lesson each participant should be able to:

1. Explain the context of Jeremiah’s ministry in the days of King Zedekiah.
2. Contrast Zedekiah’s indecisiveness with Jeremiah’s resolve.
3. Write one action to take in the week ahead to counteract an unholy trait that characterizes him or her in a weak moment.
