Our Sunday service is live on YouTube from 10am - 11am Australian Eastern Standard Time.
From 11am-11:20am the in-house and online congregations gather together for community sharing. Holy Communion is conducted at this time typically on the first Sunday of the month. To join, go to meet.esccc.org.au.
In August we will be sharing the story of Jesus from the Mark's Gospel.
We have just heard that lockdown in Sydney will be extended to the end of August. This is bad news. And this comes on the back of a lot of bad news that we have had lately. We have been living in the shadow of COVID-19 for longer than any of us would have liked. And people seem to be responding to this present challenge differently than they did last year when we first locked down. As a city we do not seem to be feeling quite as optimistic or hopeful. Instead it seems people are generally feeling tired and resigned. Feeling rather unhappy or unmotivated. And increasingly more of us are feeling especially lonely and disconnected.
Frankly, we could really use some good news right now. Normally we might point to the Tokyo Olympics happening right now as a source of good news. And yes there’s a lot of amazing things and great achievements happening there right now. But with these sporting events being performed in mostly empty venues and eerily quiet arenas, even an event like the Olympics can’t help us escape the fact that the world is not in a good place right now.
So for followers of Jesus, church is really important. Because for a lot of us right now, Sunday mornings are about the only time in our week where we get to spend a solid hour or so, hearing and celebrating some really good news, and spending time to connect with God and connect with his people to chat and to pray together over Zoom. Especially in the last few weeks we have begun to learn how to do it a lot better so that the experience is a lot more positive and encouraging for everyone who takes part. And in this month of August, it is this experience of being connected with God and his people that we want to share with you.
This August, we especially want to invite you to come and do church with us online. We want to help as many people as we can to be refreshed, to feel happier, and to be connected with God and his people. And the best way we know how to do this is by sharing and celebrating the story of the good news about Jesus in the book of Mark’s gospel. Because from Mark’s gospel, we believe that Jesus really is the Son of God who came to take away our sins, to put away evil in our world, and to defeat Satan and death itself by his own death and resurrection. And that is very good news for everyone.
