Isaiah prophesied about Jesus’ pain and torment. Jesus offered his back to those who beat me, his cheeks to those who pulled out his beard. He did not hide His face from mocking and spitting. Isaiah 50:6-7
Jesus suffered greatly, enduring scorn and shame on all our behalf. It is these words that the disciple Luke brought to mind when he wrote his gospel: “And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,” Luke 9:51
Jesus had to suffer and die for the sins of mankind. Jesus knew this well, and Jesus still went. Let me repeat. Jesus knew exactly what you and I were going to cost him. He willingly laid down His life to free us from sin. Jesus knew that it was going to be messy and painful, yet he followed the path marked out for Him towards Jerusalem, setting his face like flint.
Flint is a very hard type of sedimentary rock. When struck against steel, a flint edge produces sparks to start a fire. Setting your face like flint implies that you’re expecting some opposition, to stand strong in the face of adversity. To set your face like flint means to regard these difficulties as worthwhile when you consider what they will lead you to.
Jesus had countless opportunities to abandon the task given Him. Jesus was sent to complete the Father’s will, He was unwavering with every step He took throughout His life lead Him towards Golgatha. Jesus told his disciples of the suffering He was going to endure in Jerusalem, they pleaded with him to choose an easier path, but Jesus did not listen. Jesus was steadfast in achieving His purpose until He said, “It is finished”.
Jesus is our example! He will give us the determination to finish strong and not waver!
Remember, Jesus called us out of sin, washed us up, gave us purpose, a new life in Him which made have made us new creatures in Christ JESUS! All this is possible because He set His face like a flint!
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF OUR CROSS THAT WE MUST BEAR FOR JESUS?! It means following JESUS IS A LESS GLAMOROUS PATH!
We must never tire in leading them to repent of their sins, we must continue to encourage souls to accept JESUS. We must continue to offer the GOSPEL of SALVATION. We must encourage souls to repent and turn from their sins. We must encourage souls to be washed of their sins by using JESUS name and receiving the gift and power of the Holy Ghost speaking in tongues.
It means carrying a heavy, broken heart for the world around you. Many are confused and blind to the truth of SALVATION.
Keep in mind that setting your face like flint does not mean having a hard heart toward trials and persecution or a lack of compassion toward the souls that are struggling and bound by sin.
Throughout His ministry, Jesus was moved with compassion for the people he encountered, despite how He was treated. Even today He shows Love and Compassion for the loss. Jesus doesn't care how messed up and broken lives are.
It will be challenging to have compassion and because naturally, we think that people won’t change. We have to remind ourselves from time and time again: no one is past redeeming.
REMEMBER, that your coworkers, your neighbors, the churchgoers, your unsaved family members are actually really great people, that need to be shown how to get to JESUS.
So, do not lose heart if you have to endure pain when reaching souls for Jesus. It will not, at times, be an easy task. Setting your face like flint takes a great deal of courage and perseverance.
However, I am encouraged by my beloved Savior Jesus Christ who has gone before me and succeeded in every way.
Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Remember to draw encouragement from the Bible. I like what Hebrews 12:3 says, “For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.”
Remember, people, become weary when they act without purpose. When the going gets rough, take the time to pause and recognize the Lord’s purpose in what you are doing for Him.
REMEMBER, Jesus is here, and Jesus is in what you are doing for Him. Remember, to Shack it off, and set your face like flint, just as Jesus set His face like flint for you and me.
