John 14:8-17 Pentecost Sermon Notes
Intro - Alleluia! Christ is Risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!
The Holy Spirit Resides within Every Believer - 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you.
I Corinthians 6:19 - 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?
The Gospel is the Good News of
the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
But the Holy Spirit does Not Constantly Rest on Every Believer -
The Holy Spirit as the Dove -
32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” John 1:32-34
“The sad reality is that the Holy Spirit doesn’t rest upon every believer. He is in me for my sake, but He is upon me for yours. When the Holy Spirit rests upon a person without withdrawing, it is because He has been made welcome in a most honorable way.” (Hosting the Presence, Bill Johnson, p.137)
What should we Not do?
Do Not Grieve the Holy Spirit - 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, Ephesians 4:30-32
Our sin causes the Holy Spirit, sorrow, distress, grief.
Do Not Quench the Holy Spirit - 19 Do not quench the Spirit. I Thessalonians 5:16-19.
Quench means to extinguish, to put out the fire, to lose our passion for Jesus or our compassion for others.
What Should We Do? How do we invite the Holy Spirit to Rest upon us?
Prayer - Invite the Holy Spirit in prayer
Prayer before Pentecost - 10 days in Jerusalem waiting and praying.
Acts 1:14 - And these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary, the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
Our Prayer, the invitation of our Hearts, has varying degrees.
He Knows my Address.
The Southern Invitation
The Real Invitation - Come Holy Spirit.
Prayer before the Baptism of Jesus.
21-Luke.3.22" class="scriptRef">Luke 3:21,22 - 21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, as a dove, and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased."
