Well, in GLCC, I have been preaching through the book of Romans. You could easily hear and access the messages on our web portal at GLCC web portal and it has been the most interesting experience for me, preaching through the Word of God in this wonderful book of Romans.
Personally, I've been really blessed. Blessed because it gives you wonderful foundations and grounding on the gospel, the message of Jesus Christ, and it is so far reaching in its impact and effect. Indeed, I believe, it is the core and the heart of the Christian message.
But though I have personally benefitted a lot, I realized that having preached through the book of Romans, in a sense it does polarize the church. There are people today who greatly appreciate the Scriptures here. They love it. They enjoy it. They are blessed and edified as a result of it. But there may be also some who may not appreciate such a doctrinal book. They find, maybe, it is too doctrinal, not practical enough. They feel that maybe this is too repetitive or it should be too, or maybe it's too fundamental.
And therefore, in my journey through this book, I asked myself some questions before the Lord. Should I switch to an easier book? Should I just go faster and give the main points and not belabor so much of the details that Paul has chosen to write?
Then I come to the remembrance of 1 Tim 4:13 in my devotional reading, where it says, "Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine".
God spoke to me that people, the people of God, need the Word of God. Though it may not be immediately practical, I must trust God that as we give attendance to reading, to exhortation and to doctrine, this is what God desires and this is what He will honour.
So with this one little verse, it encouraged me. I hope to encourage you. I hope to encourage the church that we would not be too quick to look for the so-called practical and leave off the foundational, the Word of God that
nourishes our souls. I hope it will warn the presumptuous. It will encourage the saints and let us, in our own lives, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
God bless.
