“Looking ignites Lust” out of
Genesis 39:7-12. In the study, we will examine the human heart as it pertains to sexual immorality. Though this issue predominantly plagues men, it is a sinful problem that plagues everyone. Our society has infused what is sexually immoral in the sight of God, into our consciousness, making it acceptable in our day-to-day lives. When considering the way people dress, the ads we see on TV and in magazines, movies we watch, and beyond, these are all seeds the enemy plants in our heart to lead us out of our relationship with God. The issue with looking at things that are even mildly inappropriate always leads to greater sin. It is up to us to discipline ourselves to get what we look at, under control. In our Bible study text, it says in
Genesis 39:7 that Potiphar’s wife cast “longing eyes” on Joseph. Understanding this strategy from the enemy, the eyes are where everything starts as it pertains to the path of sexual immorality. The fact of the matter is, “looking empowers lust”. It all starts with looking, and it leads to lust. Once we’ve given in to having “longing eyes”, lust takes over and leads to sexual immorality. When we choose to take a stand, the enemy does not give up.
Genesis 39:10 says “so it was, as she spoke to Joseph‘s “Day by day”, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.” This is how the enemy operates. The enemy operates “day by day”, meaning he is relentless in dangling the carrot of sin in front of us to draw us away from God. This is why it is so crucial that we humble ourselves before the Lord, and that we take up our cross daily, denying ourselves and surrendering to God. We must understand what sexual immorality is in the sight of God.
Genesis 39:9 calls sexual immorality “great wickedness”! Considering this “great wickedness”, Joseph, being the man of God he was, took a stand against these "day by day" attacks from the enemy so that he would not commit this great wickedness against God! Almost any other man probably would’ve given in, but Joseph prioritized God in his life! What does Joseph’s testimony show who we ought to be? When push came to shove, Joseph ran from Potiphar’s wife! Now Joseph did not run because he needed to out sprint her. He ran as to not give in to his own flesh! This Bible study will teach us not to have long eyes because longing eyes leads to lust, lust always leads to sexual immorality, and sexual immorality separates us from God! In an evil wicked world, where Internet pornography runs rampant, it is important for us to be the man God has called us to be by humbling ourselves, and taking up our cross daily so that we are prepared for these day-to-day attacks from the enemy! If we discipline what we look at, it defuses lust, and therefore diffusing sexual immorality! To God be the glory when a man takes a stand in this area! No one should ever say it’s not possible, because if Joseph can take a stand, we also can take a stand! Lust shouldn’t be our focus, rather our focus should be what we look at!!! This requires discipline. Discipline requires denying ourselves by taking up our cross daily. Taking up our cross daily requires humility.
James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. If you are willing to take a stand, you can expect the blessing of God in your life! Amen!
