By way of introduction, let me point out to you that an often repeated phrase in the Pro Life Movement is “Make abortion unthinkable.”

The Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, which is an entity of Southern Baptists, announced earlier this year their new plan for the Pro Life Movement, already planning for what they are going to do two years from now. They call it Road to ROE50. In the overview article on their website they write,
“In 2023, 50 years will have passed since Roe v. Wade made abortion a permanent fixture in American culture. Since then, tens of millions of preborn babies’ lives have been lost.1 This statistic haunts me daily. As an organization, the ERLC has been imagining what it could look like for the pro-life movement to develop a unified call to action ahead of this tragic milestone. We are beginning a journey that we call the Road to ROE50, which is a strategic window of opportunity to unify and accelerate effective strategies through pro-life work leading up to and following the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.” Later in the article, they say, with all of this we want “to make abortion unthinkable.” — Elizabeth Graham | The Road to ROE50, A unified call to action for the pro-life movement https://erlc.com/resource-library/spotlight-articles/the-road-to-roe50/

Papists, even the Archdiocese of Baltimore, say they want to “Make abortion unthinkable.” https://www.archbalt.org/respect-life-2/making-abortion-unthinkable/

Abby Johnson, one of the biggest names in the Pro Life Movement, who is herself a Papist, and even uses her platform to lure people to the Anathema false gospel of Rome, has repeatedly said, as she did at the Celebrate Life Rally and March, “My goal is to make abortion unthinkable so that a woman never even considers darkening the door that will take the life of her unborn human child." https://ccdenver.org/abby-johnson-we-must-change-this-culture/

Feminists for Life on their website say, “We are on a mission to make abortion unthinkable.” https://www.feministsforlife.org/make-abortion-unthinkable/

PCA Presbyterians even say this. Scott Sauls, who is the pastor of Christ is King Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN, writes at the end of one of his blogs, “In short, I would rather build community and dialogue and live in a society where abortion, due to the love ready to be given to any child and any mother, is not merely illegal… …but unthinkable.” - https://scottsauls.com/blog/2019/09/28/thoughtsonabortion/

As far as I can tell this line of thinking came from a A DVD series by Scott Klusendorf, it seems originally put out in 2004, called “Making Abortion Unthinkable.” https://www.amazon.com/Making-Abortion-Unthinkable-Persuasion-Interactive/dp/1930836058

What does God have to say about this? Well, it seems to me that Jeremiah 32:35 decapitates the notion or strategy.

I. CHILD SACRIFICE HAS NEVER BEEN UNTHINKABLE TO SINNERS, AND NEVER WILL BE (v. 35)

Jeremiah 32:35a “They built the high places of Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to offer up their sons and daughters to Molech,”

CLARIFICATION I: Child sacrifice has never been nor will it ever be unthinkable to sinners.

Romans 3:15-16 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery,”

CLARIFICATION II: Child sacrifice or at least apathy towards it can be a temptation even to unglorified saints, who are still battling indwelling sin.

II. CHILD SACRIFICE HAS ALWAYS BEEN UNTHINKABLE TO GOD (v. 35b)

Jeremiah 32:35b “though I did not command them, nor did it enter into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.”‬

III. APPLICATION

I) Because child sacrifice will never be unthinkable to sinners and will always be unthinkable to God, We must work tirelessly for the criminalization of abortion, establishing equal justice for all image bearers of God.

II) Because child sacrifice will never be unthinkable to sinners and will always be unthinkable to God, We must preach the Law of God for conviction of sin. (Galatians 3:24)

III) Because child sacrifice will never be unthinkable to sinners and will always be unthinkable to God, We must preach the Gospel of God for salvation from sin. (2 Corinthians 5:20-21)

IV) Because child sacrifice will never be unthinkable to sinners and will always be unthinkable to God, We must preach the Law of God for guidance in sanctification. (1 John 5:3)

V) Because child sacrifice will never be unthinkable to sinners and will always be unthinkable to God, Preach the Gospel of God for power in sanctification. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 2 Corinthians 5:15)
