Mark 6:45-52 Sermon Notes
Intro - Courage
Jesus said to his disciples,
“Take heart/courage, it is I, do not be afraid.”

Context - Jesus Boat

Mark 6:45 - Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.

What does Jesus do in the midst of our difficult circumstances?

1. Jesus Sees Us - Mark 6:48 - And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them.


2. Jesus Comes to Us - Mark 6:49 - And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.

“Its always darkest before the dawn.”


3. Jesus Reveals His Presence to Us - Mark 6:48-50 - He meant to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, 50 for they all saw him and were terrified.


18-Exod.33.23" class="scriptRef">Exodus 33:18-23 - 18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” … 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”


4. Jesus Speaks to Us - Mark 6:50 - But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”


Take heart/courage - tharseo - to have confidence and firmness of purpose in the face of danger or testing.

Why? Because of the change in circumstances?
No, Because of the presence of Jesus.

Take heart; it is I - ego eimi - I AM

Exodus 3:13 - Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.”


Jesus Changes the Circumstances - Mark 6:51 - And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased.


John 16:33 -  I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
