Take It With You!
Here we will offer thoughts and meditations on the message to help us as we contemplate and discuss and wrestle with what we are hearing.
A second tragic result of legalistic moralism is that it obscures the goodness of good news. To reach people in our day, the gospel will have to be distinguished from moralism, because moralism is what most people outside the church think Christianity is all about-rule and standards and behavior and cleaning yourself up. Millions of people, both inside and outside the church, believe that the essential message of Christianity is, "If you behave, then you belong." From a human standpoint, that's why most people reject Christianity. A friend of mine told me the other day that the reason his now-deceased father never went to church was that he didn't think he was good enough. He said his dad thought church was all about a good person telling other good people how to be better people. But that's not what the Bible says.
Outsiders quickly detect this kind of self-righteous moralistic game that so many people inside the church are playing. They see how proud and self-righteous and flat- out unattractive these people become, and they want no part of it. People I've met who are turned off to Christianity will most often say it's because of the self-righteousness of professing Christians.
