What does Jesus really mean when he says I can be liable to hell for calling some a “fool”? Have I really committed adultery if I lust in my heart after another? What does he mean when He says I should “cut off my hand”? Tanner covers the 1st and 2nd “antitheses” from the “Sermon on the Mount.” Jesus the true Teacher and Interpreter of the Law teaches us that the Law of God has so much more to teach us about righteousness than “do not murder…” It’s about the root of the heart. Likewise, the Law does not leave our heart without instruction - but guides us faithfully so we won’t fall into temptations and lusts.
