Today two verse again, we continu in difficult passage.
Here you can find the text I'm reading:
------------------
1 Timothy 2:12-13, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve.”
Interesting points:
1. In verse 12 Paul asserted that he did not permit a woman to teach or have authority over a man, adding she must be silent (or as we discussed previously, calm). His reasoning follows in verse 13: Adam (man) was created first, then Eve (woman). To understand his logic, we have to refer to Genesis 2:18 which tells us the reason for Eve’s creation. It says, “The Lord said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”“ Eve (Woman) was created to be the helper for Adam (the man/leader). Note also, that after they had eaten from the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil, God addressed the man (the head) – the one He created first – before addressing the woman. As God’s hierarchy places the man as the head and responsible, Paul followed suit in directing that men would provide oversight of the Church.
2. Let’s not forget that Paul fully understood the established religions of his day, from the Oracle at Dephi to the pagan priestesses serving in the Temple of Artemis (Diana) in Ephesus. The prohibition against women teaching and having authority over men would have ensured there was no cross-over of heresy/pagan influences into the Church. By using Scripture to make his argument, Paul wisely directed attention away from the worship of Artemis to the one True God.
3. Many misinterpret this verse to say that women should never be permitted to teach - particularly with respect to adult men, but this contradicts other passages of Scripture. We read in Acts that Pricilla instructed Apollos... and that women like Phoebe, Junias, Chloe and others were engaged in certain responsibilities and service within the Church. However, their ministry was most certainly overseen by responsible male leadership.
Application.
Brothers, in many churches and homes women have had to step forward to fill leadership gaps because men have neglected their God-ordained place as the spiritual leader of their family and the ministry God places on their hearts. One of the goals of this Bible study is to help challenge, encourage and equip one another to fulfill God’s purpose for our lives, our family, church, community, and nation.
May we continue to build up and encourage one another to be the leaders God intends and to provide the top-cover for the righteous women in our lives to serve God calmly to their full capability.
